Thou Hast Left Thy First Love

Count what He praises before He says the hard thing, because almost nobody does.

Revelation 2:1-5 is the letter to Ephesus, a real congregation in a real city, one of seven. And the letter opens with a list.

I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.Revelation 2:2-3, King James Version

Count them. Works. Labor. Patience. Intolerance of what is evil. Discernment about false teachers. Endurance. Patience again. Labor for His name. And a specific note that they had not fainted, which means they had kept going when it got heavy.

That is eight or nine items, depending on how you divide the clauses, and every single one of them is a commendation, and they come first.

Then verse four.

Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.Revelation 2:4, King James Version

Nevertheless. One word, and the letter turns.

The praise is real and it comes first

I want to stay on the length of that list, because it is doing pastoral work.

This is a church He is about to correct, and He spends two full verses on what is right with them before He gets to what is wrong. And the praise is not warm-up material. It is specific: He names their discernment, He names that they did not faint, He names that the labor was for His name.

A person who has read only verse four has read the letter backwards.

You are not being told your work was worthless. Revelation 2:2-3 lists eight commendations before verse four says one word of correction, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps that order intact for somebody who only ever hears the fourth verse.

Now the correction itself, and the verb in it matters.

Thou hast left thy first love.

Left. Not lost. Not had taken. Left, which is a word about walking away from something that is still there.

You do not lose a thing by degrees over years. You leave it, gradually, by continuing to do everything except that.

And notice what He does not say. He does not say they had stopped loving. He does not say the works were hypocritical. He says something first has been left behind while everything downstream of it carried on running.

You are still running everything that came after it, and the letter counts every bit of that as real. Revelation 2:2 opens with I know thy works before anything is said about what was left, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps that acknowledgement standing while the correction is made.

You have left something rather than lost it, and the difference is that a thing left behind is still where you put it. Revelation 2:4 uses a verb of departure rather than a verb of loss, and the same Spirit who chose that word is the reason this is recoverable rather than gone.

Then the instruction, and there are three parts to it, and they are the most practical three verbs in the seven letters.

Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first worksRevelation 2:5, King James Version

Remember. Repent. Do the first works.

Look at the third one. Not feel the first feelings. Not recover the first fire. Do the first works, which is to say: go and do the things you used to do when it was fresh, whether or not the feeling comes with them.

That is an instruction a tired person can actually obey. You cannot manufacture an emotion. You can go and do the specific thing you used to do before it became a duty.

You have been given an instruction about actions and never about feelings. Revelation 2:5 says do the first works and never once says produce the first feelings, and it is His Spirit who protects that distinction for somebody who has been failing at an emotional requirement nobody issued.

And the first verb is worth its own moment. Remember from whence thou art fallen.

That assumes there was a height, and that He is not disputing it. The remembering He asks for is not remembering a mistake. It is remembering a real thing that really happened, which means the early days were not naivety and are not being written off.

You are being asked to remember something real rather than something naive. Revelation 2:5 says from whence thou art fallen, which grants the height, and the same Spirit who kept that clause is the reason the beginning is not embarrassing.
