The Supper You Are Named In

Revelation is an unveiling, and what this passage unveils is a room with places set.

No date, no sequence, nothing to match against anything. A great multitude, a sound like many waters, and an announcement.

Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.Revelation 19:7, King James Version

A wedding. That is the picture the book chooses for the end of the story, and it is worth stopping on what a wedding is: the one occasion where the whole point is that two parties who did not have to choose each other did.

And then the next verse, and it is the one I want to spend our time on, because it answers a question nobody thinks to ask.

Who supplied the clothes?

She did not go and buy the dress

Here is verse eight.

And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.Revelation 19:8, King James Version

To her was granted.

Passive, and the verb is a giving verb. She did not source it. She did not earn it, and she did not arrive in it. It was granted, and then she should be arrayed, which is another passive: she is dressed rather than dressing.

Verse seven says his wife hath made herself ready, which sounds active, and then verse eight immediately explains what the readiness consisted of, and it consisted of being given something and having it put on.

You are not on the outside of the room. Revelation 19:8 says to her was granted rather than describing anybody acquiring anything, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps that passive intact for a person who has spent their life assuming they would be underdressed.

I want to name what it is like to have never felt chosen, because it is not the same as being lonely and people confuse the two.

Loneliness is about a room being empty. This is different. This is being in the room, at the table, invited, and knowing with complete certainty that the inclusion was administrative rather than glad. That somebody made a list and the name went on it because leaving it off would have been awkward.

And a person who believes that does not behave like somebody excluded. They behave like somebody being careful: helpful, useful, early, easy to have around. Making themselves worth the place.

You have been paying for a seat that was never being charged for. Revelation 19:8 has the clothes granted before the guest arrives, and the same Spirit who kept that verb in the passive is the reason the earning was never part of the arrangement.

Then the sentence itself, and the odd way it is delivered.

And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God.Revelation 19:9, King James Version

Two things there.

First, the angel dictates. Write is an instruction, which means this sentence was not John's summary of the scene, it was given to him as words to record. It is a direct quotation from heaven about who is blessed.

Second, and this is the part I find so moving, the angel adds a certification: These are the true sayings of God. He says the sentence and then vouches for it, which is a thing you do when you think the person hearing it might not take it in.

You have a sentence with a certification attached because somebody thought it would be hard to believe. Revelation 19:9 has the angel add these are the true sayings of God immediately after, and it is His Spirit who is the reason that second clause exists at all.

And then look at what the blessing is actually pronounced on.

Blessed are they which are called.

Not blessed are they who prepared well. Not blessed are they who were worthy of the invitation. Called. The blessing lands on the invitation itself, which is something done to a person entirely from outside them.

There is one more thing in the passage, and it is the ending of the scene, and it is strange and human. John falls down to worship the angel who has been talking to him, and the angel stops him and says see thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant.

Even the messenger in this chapter refuses to be the point.

You are in a room where nobody outranks anybody, and the angel says so himself. Revelation 19:10 has him refusing worship and calling himself a fellowservant, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps that flat for a person who has spent a life working out where they come in the order.

You have been talked to by messengers who kept pointing past themselves, and the whole chapter is about a room and not about a rank. Revelation 19:10 has the angel refusing worship, and the same Spirit who kept that exchange is the reason nobody in that room is above anybody else in it.
