The Prayer Meeting That Did Not Stop

Herrnhut was a village of refugees, and for its first five years it did not get on with itself.

The place was on the estate of Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf, in Saxony, and from 1722 people began arriving there: Moravians and Bohemians fleeing religious pressure, and then others from various backgrounds and various convictions. They built houses. They named the village Herrnhut.

And they argued. The written accounts of those first years describe real division, disputes over doctrine and practice, and a community that by 1727 was in a genuinely bad state.

Zinzendorf gave up other business and spent months going house to house among them.

On 13 August 1727 there was a communion service at the parish church in nearby Berthelsdorf, and afterward the community described that day as a turning point. They wrote about it that way for the rest of their history.

Then, two weeks later, they did something specific.

Twenty four and twenty four

On 27 August 1727, twenty four men and twenty four women committed themselves to pray in shifts, one hour each, so that somebody in that community would be praying at every hour of the day and night.

Forty eight people. One hour each.

That is the whole mechanism, and I want you to see how ordinary it is. Nobody was being asked to do anything heroic. Nobody was asked to pray all night. Each person took one hour, which anybody can do, and the hours were laid end to end.

You are not praying too long. Luke 18:1 says Jesus spoke a parable to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint, and it is the Holy Spirit who is the reason that instruction is not an accusation against a person who has been at it for years.

Notice that Luke tells you the purpose of the parable before he tells you the parable. That is unusual. He wants nobody to misread what follows, and the stated purpose is endurance in prayer and the avoidance of fainting.

And the parable that follows is about a widow who keeps coming back to a judge who does not care, and who is answered because she keeps coming.

You have a parable in Scripture whose entire subject is somebody asking repeatedly, and Luke labels it before he tells it. Luke 18:1 states the purpose in advance, and the same Spirit who put the label first is the reason nobody has to wonder whether persistence is welcome.

Now the honest part, and this category is held to it.

The Moravians said afterward that the prayer continued, in shifts, for over a hundred years. That is the community's own tradition and it is repeated everywhere.

Historians treat it with care. How continuous the practice actually remained across that entire span, through generations, migrations and reorganizations, is not something anybody can verify from the outside, and the claim as usually stated is the community's account of itself rather than an audited fact.

I am not going to inflate it and I am not going to sneer at it. What is documented is the date, the shape of the commitment, and the fact that this small community went on, over the following decades, to send an extraordinary number of missionaries out of a village of a few hundred people.

You have a record with a modest verifiable core and a larger tradition around it, and this site tells you which is which. The written sources for 27 August 1727 are firm on the arrangement, and it is His Spirit who is the reason the arrangement is the encouraging part rather than the total.

And here is why the arrangement is the encouraging part.

Nobody at Herrnhut prayed for a hundred years. Individual people prayed for an hour, over and over, and mostly did not see anything happen during their hour, and got up and went back to work.

The hundred years is made entirely of single hours in which nothing appeared to be happening.

That is worth holding onto, because the number is what gets quoted and the number is not what anybody did. Nobody signed up for a century. Forty eight people signed up for sixty minutes each, and then some of them died and other people took their hours, and the length is simply what accumulated behind them while they were doing something small.

You have been inside one hour of something you cannot see the length of. Luke 18:1 says always rather than describing any single session, and the same Spirit who chose that word is the reason your repeated hour is not a failure to progress.
