The Cloud Moved Around Behind Them

This message is for the reader with water in front of them and the past coming up fast behind

Read the geography before you read the miracle, because the geography is the terror.

Exodus 14 has them camped by the sea at Pihahiroth. Water ahead. Migdol and the wilderness on the sides. And behind them, six hundred chosen chariots and all the chariots of Egypt, coming fast across open ground. They can see the dust. Verse ten says they lifted up their eyes, and behold, the Egyptians marched after them, and they were sore afraid.

There is no exit in that picture. That is the point of the way the writer sets the map. Not a hard road, not a long road. No road.

And what they say next is one of the most honest sentences frightened people ever said: were there no graves in Egypt? Which is bitter and rude and also entirely fair. They are standing at a shoreline with an army behind them, and the thing they reach for is the past, because the past at least was survivable. It was awful, and they knew the shape of it.

Then Moses says stand still and see the salvation of the Lord. And God says something that sounds almost impatient: wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward.

But before the sea opens, before the wind comes, before anybody goes anywhere, something else happens first. And this is the verse almost nobody stops on.

The Cloud Moved Around Behind Them

The first thing He moved was not the sea

And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them.Exodus 14:19, King James Version

The pillar had been the guide. For however many days it had gone in front, showing the way, and every person in that column had spent the entire journey walking toward it. It was the thing they looked at.

And now, with an army closing, it leaves the front.

Sit with how that must have felt for a moment before working out what it meant. The guidance goes. The thing they had been following disappears from where it has always been. From inside that column, the first read is abandonment.

Then you turn around, and it is standing between you and the chariots.

Verse twenty says it was a cloud and darkness to them, and it gave light by night to these, and they came not near the other all the night. All night. The whole night, the Egyptians could not close the distance, because God had personally taken up a position in the gap.

Here is what I want to preach into your kitchen tonight. When you were in trouble, God did not first fix the front. He covered the back.

You have been staring at the water, and it is not what is actually keeping you awake. Exodus 14:19 has the pillar leaving the front and taking up a position at the back, and it is the Holy Spirit who is the reason that arrangement is about a real room tonight. The bill, the scan, the conversation on Monday, the thing in front with no way through it. That is all real. What is keeping you awake is behind you. It is the version of this that already happened once. It is what your father did, or what you did in the last one of these, or the season you have never fully got clear of, and it is coming across open ground at you with the dust up.

You have God gone around behind you. That is not poetry, it is Exodus 14:19, and the Holy Spirit is standing in the exact gap between you and what is chasing you tonight.

And notice: the same cloud is dark on one side and light on the other. One presence, two effects. What terrifies the pursuer is what lights the room.

You are not looking at the same God your fear is looking at. Exodus 14:20 says it was a cloud and darkness to them and gave light by night to these, in one verse, and the same Spirit who kept both halves is the reason one presence can be two things at once.

Now the part that costs something. The pillar left the front to do it. Which means, for that whole night, they had cover and no visible guidance. They could not see the way forward. They could only see that the way back was blocked by God Himself.

You are in exactly that night, with cover and no visible guidance. Exodus 14:19 has the pillar leave the front in order to hold the rear, and it is His Spirit who is the reason no direction and no danger can be true at the same time. No idea what Monday looks like. And a noticing, lately, that the thing which used to swallow you has not been able to get near, and no name for that.

Call it the pillar. He is not gone. He has moved to where the danger actually was, and His Spirit is what holds a gap all night without getting tired.

And then, in the morning, the sea. But not before the back was covered. He never once opened a way forward while leaving somebody exposed from behind.

The breakthrough

So turn around.

You have been facing the water all night, doing the arithmetic on a thing that has no arithmetic. Turn around and look at what is behind you, because that is where God is standing.

You have a past that is not coming through, and it is not being held back by how well you are coping. Exodus 14:20 says they came not near the other all the night, and the Spirit of God has not moved off that position since. It is not being managed by you and it is not being outrun by you.

You were never charged for the fear you felt at the shoreline. Exodus 14:11-12 records something bitter and unfair said to God with the dust coming up, and the very next thing in the written account is Him moving to protect them, and the same Spirit who kept that order is the reason panic has never been the disqualifying thing.

And what the written account has, it has already: a sea that nobody standing on that shore parted, and a road through it that nobody on that beach could see the night before. The walking was theirs. The road was not.

Hear this too, plainly: the fear you felt at the shoreline was never counted against you. That whole nation said something bitter and unfair to God with the dust coming up, and the very next thing He did was move to protect them.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Thing that has been gaining on me, you come no nearer. Exodus 14 says the pillar went from the front and stood in the gap and they came not near all the night, and the Spirit of God is in that gap tonight. I am covered from behind, and the past does not get through.
  2. Fear that says it ends the same way, get out of this house. You have been running old footage at me every time something good starts, and Exodus 14:20 says they came not near the other all the night, which ends you, in the name of Jesus, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is enforcing it tonight. I am walking forward with my back covered.
  3. Lord who moved before the water, You went around behind me first. Exodus 14 has You leave the front of the column to stand where the danger actually was, and Your Spirit is standing there still. You have never once opened a way ahead and left me exposed behind.
