Somebody Was Writing It Down

This message is for the reader who thinks the years they were faithful went completely unnoticed

You have to hear the complaint before the comfort makes any sense.

Malachi 3:13-15 is people talking about God where they think it does not matter, and it is uncomfortably familiar.

Your words have been stout against me, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee? Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the LORD of hosts? And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.Malachi 3:13-15, King James Version

Read that plainly. It is vain to serve God. What did it get us. We kept the ordinance and we walked mournfully and the arrogant are the ones doing well.

That is not a heretic speaking. That is a discouraged believer doing arithmetic out loud, in Judah, sometime in the fifth century before Christ, a couple of generations after the return from Babylon. The temple has been rebuilt and it is smaller than the old one. The prophets are nearly finished. Nothing that was hoped for has arrived at the size it was hoped for.

Then comes verse sixteen, and it opens with the word then.

Somebody Was Writing It Down

What they were doing when the record started

Here is the verse.

Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.Malachi 3:16, King James Version

Now look at what they are actually doing.

Spake often one to another.

They are talking. To each other. Not preaching, not prophesying, not standing up in an assembly. There is no altar in this verse and no offering and no public act of any kind. A handful of people who feared the LORD kept talking to each other about Him in a discouraging decade, and that is the whole of the activity being described.

You have been doing the thing this verse is about without once counting it as anything. Malachi 3:16 records a conversation and not a ceremony, and it is the Holy Spirit who lifts that off the page and lays it over a phone call you made on a Tuesday.

And then the three verbs that follow, in order, because the order is the tenderness.

The LORD hearkened. He leaned in.

And heard it. He caught the actual words.

And a book of remembrance was written before him. Somebody wrote it down.

Nobody in that room knew. That is the part I keep coming back to. There is no indication anywhere in the passage that the people talking were aware of any of this. They were not performing. They were two or three discouraged people saying to each other, more or less, we are still going to hold on to this. And while they said it, a record was being opened.

You have been recorded in years you were sure had gone unwitnessed, and the writing was happening while you were concluding otherwise. The written word says the book was written before him, which means in His presence and not in a place a person could check, and the same Spirit who kept that record is the reason it is not a comforting figure of speech.

Now, I want to be careful with the next phrase, because it is the one that gets people. For them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name.

Thought upon his name. Not achieved. Not succeeded. Not built anything. Thought upon. The qualification for the book is an inward and mostly invisible thing, which means that almost none of what got you into it was ever going to be visible to the people around you, including you.

You were entered on a list whose entry requirement you have been meeting all along without evidence you could show anyone. Malachi 3:16 says thought upon his name, and it is His Spirit who makes that a fact about your file rather than a nice sentiment about faithfulness in general.

Then verse seventeen, and it changes the temperature.

And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.Malachi 3:17, King James Version

When I make up my jewels. The older sense of that phrase is a treasured possession being gathered together, the way a person collects the things they will not leave behind. And then the comparison: as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. Family language, in a chapter that opened with people saying serving God had got them nothing.

You have been called a treasure by the same voice that just listened to the complaining, and neither sentence cancels the other. Malachi 3:14 and 3:17 sit fourteen lines apart in the same chapter, and the same Spirit who kept them both in the book is the reason a discouraged person is not disqualified from being gathered.

The breakthrough

So stop assessing your years by what came of them.

You have been running the same sum the people in verse fourteen ran. What profit is it. It is an honest sum and God does not pretend it was not asked, but it measures the wrong thing, because it measures the visible outcome and the book was never keeping the visible outcome.

You are not unrecorded, and the entry was made while you were deciding it had all gone unnoticed. Malachi 3:16 opens with then, which attaches the writing directly to the talking, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that attachment personal instead of historical.

You have been listened to by somebody who leaned in, and the leaning came before the writing. The written word puts hearkened first and written third, and the same Spirit who preserved that order is the reason a small kitchen conversation is not beneath the record.

And I will not put one ounce on you: the discouragement is not held against you. God quotes it word for word in verse fourteen and then, three lines later, calls the same people His jewels. He did not require them to stop being tired first. What God writes down, He does not cross out over a bad decade, and He has never asked anybody to feel appreciated before He would appreciate them.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Years I have counted as unnoticed, you are not the record. Malachi 3:16 says the LORD hearkened and heard it and a book was written, three verbs before anybody in the room knew, and His Spirit keeps that ledger open. I am written down.
  2. Sum that says nothing came of it, get out, in the name of Jesus. You have measured my life by the visible outcome, and the written word says thought upon his name, which was never a thing anybody could see, and that ends you, and his Spirit has been on that verse the whole time I was arguing with you. What heaven writes, nobody has to witness for it to count.
  3. Lord, You are the God who called them jewels three lines after they complained, and You are doing it here. Scripture says as a man spareth his own son that serveth him, and Your Spirit did not wait for me to stop being tired. I am putting the sum down, and I am trusting the page I have never seen.
